Still Life with Pipe (Primary Title)
John F. Peto, American, 1854 - 1907 (Artist)
A smoldering match and glint of a live ember lend a smoky ambiance to Peto’s Still Life with Pipe. The intimate painting also reveals the artist’s understanding of the traditional elements of successful trompe-l’oeil compositions: placing simple objects against a dark background, arranging them in a shallow space, and bringing them so near the picture plane that they appear to be within the viewer’s grasp.
