Late in his career, Picasso—ever the innovator—continued to push the limits of his own pictorial language. He began to look increasingly at the work of old masters such as Velázquez and Delacroix to explore new techniques, such as the painterly brushstroke, particularly evident in the calligraphic patterns on the dark background of this painting.
