Architect and designer Henry van de Velde created Bloemenwerf, his house in a rural village outside Brussels. He based his design on the model of modern cottage architecture. Van de Velde and his wife designed the entire interior, which included varnished oak furniture and rush-seat chairs. The dining room contained eight side chairs, two armchairs, a child’s high chair, a buffet, a china cabinet, and a table. The dining room side chair, designed in 1895, was put into production between 1896 and 1898. The museum’s example is from this later series.
