Jenkins Orphanage Band (No. 2) (Primary Title)
Alfred Heber Hutty, American, 1877 - 1954 (Artist)
New York artist Alfred Hutty began spending his winters in Charleston, South Carolina, in 1919. Returning annually for the remainder of his life, he established a print studio, became deeply involved in historic preservation efforts, and helped lead the Charleston Renaissance of writers, poets, and artists. Hutty’s paintings and prints frequently picture his adopted city’s people and environs. Jenkins Orphanage Band portrays the young street musicians who gave concerts to much acclaim throughout the United States and Europe. The band is credited for starting the 1920s dance fad, the “Charleston.”
