At a young age, Kano Naonobu apprenticed with his father, an established Kano-school painter in Kyoto. In 1623, he began serving the Shogunate as a court painter. In this screen, rendered with monochromatic ink, flowing lines, and negative space, Naonobu created vigorous imagery of a legendary dragon. Along with his younger brother Tanyu, he completed some highly prestigious screens for the castles in Edo, Kyoto, and Osaka.
