The Incredulity of St. Thomas (Primary Title)
Follower of, Nicolas Froment, French, active ca. 1460 - ca. 1484 (Artist)
These two panels were probably painted by a French artist from Provence in the manner of Nicholas Froment. Froment was the leading artist in the south of France in the third quarter of the 15th century, and he brought a knowledge of the latest Netherlandish styles to the court of René of Anjou.
The reverse sides of these panels once features painted full-length figures of St. Anthony and St. Sebastian, suggesting that the panels were once part of the larger altarpiece. The angular style of these paintings owes much to the influence of contemporary Netherlandish painting, but they are cruder, with simple, heavily outlined figures and stiffly painted drapery.
