Red-figure Cup (Primary Title)
attributed to the manner of, Douris, Greek, active ca. 500 B.C.- 475 B.C. (Artist)
The tondo (interior) of this cup shows a scene of courtship between an older man (erastes) and a young man (eromenos). Such relationships were central to the social structure of many Greek city-states, as the erastes was not only the eromenos’s lover but also his teacher in the various skills expected of a citizen, including athletics, military training, philosophy, and music.
Inscription painted on interior. See collections file for Greek transcription; in english: "go away".
