Porphery, a highly prized stone from Egypt, was used for prestigious imperial monuments. This head is thought to come from a sarcophagus carved in very high relief. Although its scale is similar to heads of erotes on another porphyry sarcophagus, the facial features seem more specific, suggesting that this was a portrait-perhaps of a young prince.
