The ewer, which was introduced to India from Iran and Central Asia, was used throughout the Islamic world for ritual handwashing that preceded prayer and other religious activities. Many ewers had matching basins. This elegant example, cast in several parts from a copper alloy, combines Persian and Indian design elements.
