A sacred town in northern Tokyo, Nikkō is known for temples, shrines, and shogunate mausoleums. Senjō Plain is a historic site in Nikkō and the place where forces of the feudal Shogun and state emperor (mikado) battled in 1389. This print depicts a thin forest of birch trees stretching across an otherwise barren landscape. Only wildflowers in the foreground remind the viewer of the land’s former vitality.
