Christ Carrying the Cross (Primary Title)
Unknown (Artist)
Notable for the precision of its painting, this small roundel depicts Christ on His way to Calvary. It was produced by painting colorless glass with a monochrome enamel (“grisaille”) and then adding silver stain to produce a range of yellowish tonalities. By the early 16th century, roundels of this sort were being produced – primarily in the Lowland countries and Germany – for a mass market.
