Raoul Dufy, French, 1877 - 1953 (Artist)
Dufy first gained notice as a member of the avant-garde Fauve group. Because of his emphasis on idyllic subjects and appealing visual sensation, critics aligned him with Matisse. This painting is one in a series from the late 1920s that features recumbent studio models. Dufy’s mature style was built on the interaction of intense color and an extremely quick and abstract line. But Reclining Nude also recognizes the grand history of Western art. For Dufy, the nude offered both an acknowledgement of the past and an opportunity for innovation.
