A botanist by training, Émile Gallé used nature as a design source for his furniture and glass. His furniture is carved and decorated with a variety of plants and insects in a highly realistic manner, as seen in this etagere. The decoration includes a carved dragonfly, a favorite motif in French Art Nouveau.
