Archipenko’s 1916 drawing Standing Female embodies the formal innovations of his three-dimensional work. Drawn in black and red pencil, the work represents his most characteristic theme of the full-length standing female figure with her arms on her hips, and head turned to the side. The complex play of edges, shadows, and varied geometric forms parallels the interchange of void and mass in his sculpture. The head as void appears in the way the face flows into the surrounding emptiness ofpaper, defined only by a single lashed eyelid and framed by three strands of wavy hair.
