This print’s graceful lines and large, textured fields of color evoke an open book; one of its pages is illustrated in red with calligraphic strokes. Though trained in classical Japanese calligraphy since age six, Shinoda was also strongly influenced by Abstract Expressionism, a movement of particular interest to the artist during her travels to the United States in the late 1950s. Shinoda’s art represents a juxtaposition of contemporary and traditional approaches, as well as Eastern and Western methods.
