In this order, and at an excellent pace, they got over the hill, on descending / which, The Black Diamond headed Wedge, laid second for nearly a quarter of a mile, andthen declined. The other horses composing the front / rank kept their places, and the two favorites were now seen creeping up from the rear. At the Red-House, Carew gave up further contest, / and, in making the turn, Elis, Scroggins, and Bee's-wing, went a-head, Snyders, The Bard, The Carpenter, and Redshank, lying well up with / them, none of the others at this point tailed off. On reaching the rails, Elis had a decided lead, Scroggins and Bee's-wing immediately behind. / At the distance, Elis had the race in hand, the struggle for the second place resting between Scroggins and Bee's-wing. The horses now beaten / off were--Carew, The Black Diamond, Trapball, Vulture, Wedge, Redshank, Locomotive, and Ebberston. Elis maintained his leadto the end, / and won easily by two lengths. Scroggins beat Bee's-wing by a head for second: Snyders ran fourth, The Bard fifth, and The Carpenter sixth. Inscribed in graphite, upper right and lower right corners: 22.
