This position was not maintained many lengths; forBubastes rushed forth, took a decisive lead, / and kept it, at extraordinary speed, until after he had passed the Red-House, Shillelah having at this point obtained a central situation. / Mr. Chisholme's filly retained her place in the rear during the whole of the race; and Plenipotentiary and Touchstone appeared also to be / beaten on nearing the Red-house. On Bubastes declining the contest, Bran, General Chassé, and Worlaby Baylock were eased by their / respective jockies; but Touchstone hadby this time recovered his speed, and before reaching the white rails, appeared very much like the / winner. Lady de Gros, Bran, and Worlaby Baylock were leading at the end of the rails; when General Chassé took the command, followed / closely by Touchstone, apparently hard held. On reaching the distance (although so far from home) Touchstone was let loose, when he / shot a-head, and won very cleverly by nearly two lengths. A severe race: run in 3 minutes and 16 seconds.--The above is the order in / which the whole of the St. Leger horses came in. Inscribed in graphite in upper right and lower right corners: 11.
