The Scene with the Quack (Former Title)
William Hogarth, English, 1697 - 1764 (Artist)
In this plate the viscount and his young mistress, accompanied by her furious mother, visit a French doctor. The black spot on his neck is indicative of exposure to mercury, the active ingredient in pills prescribed for venereal disease. As in the other prints, the bizarre setting ironically comments on the foibles and ill fate of the protagonists.
