In northeastern Honshu , Japan’s central island, the Hakkoda Mountains are covered in snow half the year. This warm-weather scene depicts Jogakura Gorge, a winding ravine carving through the Hakkoda mountainside. All is cloaked in shadow and thick foliage with the exception of the cliff in the foreground. Choppy waters break against its shingled, sunlit surface. In the 1930s, this print and twenty-three others were included in Hasui’s Collection of Scenic Views of Japan, Eastern Japan Edition.
