Untitled [Harlem, NY] (Primary Title)
Self-Portrait Series (Series Title)
Ming Smith, American, born c. 1951 (Artist)
The silhouette against the wall in this image is that of Anthony Barboza, according to Ming Smith. In the photograph—which was reproduced in her portfolio in The Black Photographers Annual— Barboza appears to be holding a camera close to his body as he walks. The camera strap dangles down to form a delicate line that echoes the organic shapes formed by peeling paint behind and above him. Similarly, Barboza’s image of Smith’s shadow in Ming Smith, NYC, features her camera, which she holds out in front of her, as if she is actively composing a shot.
