Examples of figures seated atop knobby rods have been found at the waists of skeletons, indicating that they were once attached to belts. This is a late example, but the earlier figures (from around 700 BC) are more naturalistic, with plumper hands held to their mouths. These objects may be amulets symbolizing nourishment, fertility, and regeneration.
