A district in the western outskirts of Kyoto, Arashiyama is known for its beautiful scenery, especially its wild cherry trees, which bloom from late March through early April. Arashiyama has been a popular destination for nobles and tourists since the Heian period (794–1185). Here, Hasui captured the cherry blossoms along the Oi River during his journey to Kansai, the south central region of Japan’s main island, Honshu.
