This touching lithograph served as the cover sheet to Études de Chevaux après Nature, a set of prints showing distinctive breeds of horses from different regions of the world. The lithographic process used in this is typically associated with the production of many inexpensive fliers, maps, and posters in the early 19th century, however, Géricault adopted it early and successfully realized its artistic potential, easily discernable in this sensitive and delicately rendered family portrait.
