Arita potters faced challenges in both form and design when imitating Chinese export ceramics in the making of this covered box. The floral panels against a background of textile patterns match well the design on the cover. They even faithfully copied the mark of the reign of the Chinese emperor Wanli (1573-1620) on the base. Like the Chinese original, this box was made for the European market.
