This is part of Piranesi’s grand series of Views of Rome, which he began in the 1640s and which aimed to depict significant ancient and contemporary monuments in and around the city. Maecenas, whose country retreat is shown here, was an adviser to the Emperor Augustus, known for his prefect taste and patronage of the arts. Piranesi shows the remains of his villa in Tivoli (outside Rome) as an overwhelmingly large and magnificent building.
