Hasui captured the volcanic Mount Unzen from the peaceful view of verdant pine trees in the foreground. A former province of Japan, Hizen is near present-day Nagasaki on the southern island of Kyushu. Thin clouds line the mountain peaks, illuminating them in pink and red as daylight recedes. Hasui delicately rendered small fishing vessels anchored in the bay below.
