In this watercolor, horses canter alongside the railing to enter the paddock just before a race. The horses’ tense musculature, depicted as flattened planes in the cubist style, exaggerates the composure of their strides. Little known today, Despierre was an academic cubist fully familiar with the works of painters such as Jacques Villon, who in studies such as this successfully achieved a fusion of the experimental and the decorative possibilities of the style.
