The weathered condition and elaborate base of this sculpture indicate that it was placed in front of the central pillar (trumeau) that supported the lintel and tympanum above the entrance to a church. The style of the figure suggests that it originally belonged to a church in the area of Eastern France. The now badly mutilated infant originally grasped the Virgin’s veil, establishing an actual human connection between mother and child.
