The Worship of Shri Nathji on Sharat Purnima in the Nijamandira of the Shri Nathji Mandira at Nathadwara (Former Title)
Unknown (Artist)
This painting depicts the worship of Shri Nathji, the black stone image of the god Krishna, at his primary temple in Nathadwara. Such pictures were produces for pilgrims to take home as souvenirs of their visits to the shrine. Elaborately dressed and adorned with garlands, Shri Nathji stands on a platform surrounded by a variety of ritual implements. Six devotees flank the scene, most holding ceremonial fans and flywhisks while the chief priest bears a lighted lamp. They have gathered for the full-moon festical of Sharat Purnima, commemorating—as on the large backdrop, or pichhavai, in the painting and on the actual pichhavai to the left—the autumn night when Krishna met the gopis (cow maidens) in the moonlit forest.
