[1] Johanna van Gogh-Bonger was the wife of the art dealer, Theo van Gogh, and sister-in-law to artist, Vincent van Gogh.
[2] Johanna van Gogh-Bonger sold the drawing to J.H. de Bois Art Gallery, affiliated with the Hague Gallery of C.M. van Gogh (Vincent van Gogh’s uncle) by 1912. It is not clear how long the drawing stayed with the de Bois Gallery.
[3] It is not known where the drawing was from 1912 – 1947. It is not known when Wildenstein acquired the drawing. Wildenstein is listed as owner in 1947, 1948 and 1949 exhibition catalogues.
[4] Barker is listed owner in 1970 in J.B. de la Faille’s 1992 edition of his Catalogue Raisonné: Vincent van Gogh: The Complete Works on Paper, Catalogue Raisonné. Vol. 1. It is not known if it was purchased from Wildenstein.
[5] The work was included in the Sotheby Parke Bernet Sale: Property of the Estate of the Late Edith Kane Baker - New York October 28-29, 1977, Lot 267.
[6] It is likely E.V. Thaw bough the drawing from the Parke Bernet sale. He sold the drawing to Paul Mellon in January of 1978.
