Typical of Benares pictures from Lumsden’s second trip to India, this plate shows people along the riverside, most sheltering from the sun under awnings and umbrellas made of bamboo, fabric, and thatch. Direct, gestural lines describe the figures and their delicate refuges. Tall bamboo poles sporadically break the horizontal composition’s monotony. Dark, dense lines indicate not only proximity to the viewer but also the depth of cooling shadow against the scorching light.
