This nearly symmetrical composition depicts men laboring in the hot sun, carrying freight from river ships to a road above the ghats. Lusmden described their activity in a 1925 essay: “from early morning till late evening gangs of coolies toil up the steep ascent carrying the huge blocks of stone in slings, which stacked in rows, are taken away as required in ox-carts.” An empathetic report of these men’s toil, the image is as much—as was so frequently Lumsden’s motive—a study of bright sunlight and shadow.
