The Bagnio (Primary Title)
Marriage A La Mode (Series Title)
The Death of the Earl (Former Title)
William Hogarth, English, 1697 - 1764 (Artist)
Bagnio was a term for a Turkish bathhouse, but could also refer to a bordello or similar establishment that lent rooms for private affairs. Here the count has discovered the unfaithful countess together with Silvertongue following a masquerade the couple attended together. The lawyer delivers the count a fatal wound before fleeing out the window. The squalid and ridiculous artwork in the room is meant to emphasize the depths to which the count has fallen.
