Ganesha (Primary Title)
Unknown (Artist)
After the sixteenth century, when the format was introduced from India, Nepal began to produce sets of miniature paintings illustrating themes unrelated to specific texts. This charming picture from such a set shows a lion carrying the elephant-headed Hindu god, Ganesha, who sits meditating on a pink lotus. A red aura delicately decorated with scrollwork surrounds Ganesha and his mount. The jovial deity's body, central head, and far tight head are yellow; his remaining three heads are blue, green, and white; he holds traditional attributes in eight of his ten hands.
