Jacque, a skilled painter and etcher of pastoral themes, was a member of the Barbizon School, a group of painters whose artistic focus was images of ordinary rural subjects. In this print, Jacque drew inspiration from the artists who were considered the greatest masters of realism: Dutch 17th-century painters and etchers such as Rembrandt and Adriaen van Ostade.
