Page from a Ramayana Series: Rama, Sita, and Laksmana Talking to a Holy Man (Primary Title)
Unknown (Artist)
This painting is from a series depicting the adventures of Rama, the hero of the great Sanskrit epic the Ramayana. Followed by his faithful wife, Sita, and his loyal brother, Lakshmana, Rama approached a holy man, one of several ascetics he encounters when exiled for fourteen years in the forest. Typical of 19th-century painting from western Rajasthan’s Jaipur state, the toylike figures are rendered with an even, wiry line and inhabit a stylized landscape. Two diminutive palaces or towns appear on the horizon line, heightening the picture’s somewhat awkward feeling of spatial recession.
