This coiled basket is representative of the Fraser River Salish basketry style commonly found in the Canadian Plateau. The rectangular base, flat spreading sides, and overall hamper-like appearance of this basket indicate its purpose as a storage vessel. The zig-zag, horizontal and vertical patterns decorating the basket are among several geometric and realistic designs used in Fraser River basketry. Passed down through female generations, these designs were often applied using red cherry bark and white bear grass, emphasizing color use as well as technique.
