Form follows function with this conical-shape Paiute water jar from the Great Basin region. The narrow-necked mouth and pointed base prevented spillage when the basket rested on its side or was placed vertically in soft sand or soil. The pine pitch coating created an essentially waterproof seal that minimized evaporation. Similar vessels often included loops attached to a carrying strap for travel purposes.
