Scribner's Fiction Number, August (Primary Title)
Maxfield Parrish, American, 1870 - 1966 (Artist)
Though he is now best known for his highly saturated oil paintings, Maxfield Parrish began his fifty-year career as one of the leading American designers of the Golden Age of Illustration. Parrish was commissioned by numerous magazines, including Charles Scribner’s Sons’ Scribner’s Magazine, for which this lithograph advertises. Typical of his “girls on rocks” subject matter for both paintings and posters, this composition depicts a nude female figure presumably reading a copy of Scribner’s.
