Theseus Combating the Centaur Bianor (sketch) (Primary Title)
Lapith and the Centaur (Former Title)
Antoine-Louis Barye, French, 1796 - 1875 (Artist)
Like Theseus Slaying the Minotaur, this sculpture presents both a classical subject and a combat between a hero and a half-man/half-beast. However, unlike the slightly earlier work, Barye abandons the Neoclassical style in favor of fully Romantic rendition somewhat indebted, like some of his other sculptures, to the Renaissance master Giambologna.
