The Blessing of the Children (Primary Title)
also Christ Blessing the Children (Translation)
Tiffany Glass & Decorating Company, American, New York, 1892 - 1900 (Artist)
At the turn of the 20th century, leaded-glass windows made by Tiffany Glass & Decorating Company were in great demand by American churches. This window was created for All Saints Episcopal Church in Richmond, Virginia, by Frederick Wilson, who designed thousands of religious figural windows and mosaics for Tiffany. Wilson’s work exemplifies the dramatic effects of color, light, and texture that could be achieved in glass through a variety of innovative techniques. This grouping of windows was installed above the church’s baptistery.
The subject matter comes from Matthew 19:13–15, in which Jesus—to the annoyance of his disciples—pauses to bless the children who had come to him. The windows were commissioned in memory of Samuel Freedley by “Miss Freedley and brother.”
