Nude (Primary Title)
Aristide Maillol, French, 1861 - 1944 (Artist)
Maillol began a career in the 1890s as a painter and tapestry designer. After 1900 he committed himself to sculpture and by 1920 was regarded as France’s leading artist in this medium. Maillol developed a historicized treatment of the human figure, incorporating classical and other traditional influences into his work. Both the nude subject and the use of black and white chalk recall the grand tradition of French academic drawing. Maillol frequently depicted his models in this pose in his sculptures and drawings.
