(Primary Title)
布袋和尚、秋景冬景図 桃山時代 狩野玉楽筆 紙本水墨淡彩 (Series Title)
Kanō Gyokuraku, Japanese, active 1550 - 1590 (Artist)
The middle scroll shows Hotei, an eccentric Chinese Zen monk of the 10th century. The abrupt and angular brushstrokes that form his robe and the fine lines that form his facial features capture the spirit of this legendary Zen figure. The right and left scrolls depict a gentleman strolling along a riverbank and a fisherman in a snowy landscape. Here human figures are dwarfed; nature and people are one. Paintings depicting Zen subjects were highly appreciated by monks and military officials who commissioned them for temples and shogun residences. Gyokuraku studied with Kano Motonobu (1476–1559) in Kyoto. He later became a court painter working for Hojo Ujimasa (1538–1590), a military ruler near Tokyo.
