This Zen painting depicts a seascape of a boat approaching the shore surrounded by rocks, trees and houses. The Zen emphasis on simplicity and spontaneity is achieved through splashes of ink wash and minimum brushwork. The painting has been identified by Kakei Zoshi of the Daitokuji Temple in Kyoto, and the poem inscribed above is by Ten’in Ryuutaku, a Zen priest of the Kanninji Temple. Together they collaborated on numerous paintings in the late 15th century.
