Kishi Chikudo 岸竹堂, Japanese, 1826 - 1897 (Artist)
The tiger, a popular and celebrated subject in East Asian art, is associated with ferocity, strength, and gracefulness. Here it is rendered in the realistic style of the Kishi school, a Japanese artistic movement of the mid-18th century that focused on naturalistic images of animals and landscapes. Chikudo pays close attention to lighting and posture, capturing the animal’s powerful essence with expressive brushstrokes and bold color washes.
