During the 1950s Cunningham walked urban environments photographing abandoned storefronts and decayed buildings. By placing her reflection and shadow amidst the contents of window displays, she created visual commentaries on conventions of beauty and fashion. Here Cunningham’s form appears among neglected and bent, light-fixture parts. Such a juxtaposition may connote the realities of aging (she was in her 70s at the time), a subject she previously explored while photographing her father in his 90s.
