Selections from the Phil Berg Collection (EX.1874B). LACMA May 18-August 13, 1989

Man Came This Way: Objects from the Phil Berg Collection, LACMA, Los Angeles, March 9 - May 30, 1971, no. 90.

The Phil Berg Collection, The Los Angeles County Art Institute Galleries, Los Angeles, January 8 to February 27, 1959.
By January 1959, in the Phil Berg Collection; [1] By 1971, in the Los Angeles County Museum of Art (LACMA) collection, Los Angeles, California (Inventory Number 71.73.88); [2] By November 2020, LACMA and (Robert Haber and Associates, New York); [3] Purchased by Virginia Museum of Fine Arts (VMFA), Richmond, VA, January 2021. [4]

[1] Published in the Phil Berg Collection, Los Angeles County Art Institute Galleries, Jan/Feb 1959, no. 31. At this point, appears to be a loan, rather than formally in the ownership of LACMA. In a later 1971 exhibition catalogue on Phil Berg’s collection at LACMA, the entry for this object lists: “Ex Coll. De Motte, London.” It is not known whether Berg acquired it directly from this collection, nor has this earlier ownership been verified.

[2] The object was a part of a larger gift from Phil Berg, in 1971 (see inventory number); it is featured in 1971 in a show called, “Man Came This Way: Objects from the Phil Berg Collection”. Berg died in 1983 but made arrangements in 1969 to leave his collection to LACMA (while still retaining ownership until he died, according to an article by United Press International).

[3] Dealer Robert Haber & Associates, by November 2020, represented the object jointly with LACMA. VMFA purchased the object from Haber. Invoice dated November 17, 2020.

[4] Accessioned January 13, 2021. Information in VMFA Curatorial and Registration files.
