Calligraphy, after Shimensong Stele in Clerical Script (Translation)
隸書節臨石門頌四屏 清晚期 張祖翼 紙本 (Primary Title)
Zhang Zuyi 張祖翼, Chinese, 1849 - 1917 (Artist)
The Eulogy at Stone Gate (Shimen Song) is a memorial tribute written by Han dynasty court official Wang Sheng in honor of Yang Mengwen, who oversaw the construction of a tunnel through a rugged mountainous area. The 655-character text was engraved in the clerical script in 148 AD on a huge cliff at the tunnel entrance in Shaanxi Province. This set of four scrolls by official scholar Zhang Zuyi represents the balanced structure, square form, and thin and graceful strokes of Shimen Song, one of the most treasured Chinese calligraphic styles, created nearly 2,000 years ago.
