In the early 1920s, Shinsui began to shift his interest from the landscape to the depiction of women. Unlike traditional ukiyo-e prints, which feature geishas, this portrait shows a modern woman with curled hair and light makeup, wearing a green kimono overcoat and a shawl over her shoulders. The artist used fine lines to define the facial features and embossing to highlight the pattern on the shawl. The woman’s downcast gaze offers a hint of her inner world. In this genre, Shinsui depicts not only the changing fashion of women but also the people as cultural representatives in the new era. Two additional examples of Shinsui’s paintings are currently on view in the museum’s Japanese gallery.
