Walking Lion (Primary Title)
Lion Qui - Marche (Alternate Title)
Antoine-Louis Barye, French, 1796 - 1875 (Artist)
Barye represented felines – particularly the lion – more frequently than any other animal. Long associated with nobility, strength, and courage, the lion was said to kill only for survival, while the tiger killed out of cruelty and blood lust. Barye’s lion conveys the sleek power of the muscular cat. Both the patina and the detail of the lion are particularly fine, indicating that the sculpture was made under Barye’s direct supervision.
